The East Riding now have mobile CCTV cameras in the fight against fly tipping. At a recent East Riding scrutiny meeting, it was announced that these would be deployed in hot spots throughout the County.
Following a question from Local Ward Councillor Felicity Temple who was present at the meeting it was agreed that these could be used on Green Lanes as well as the highway.
Cllr Temple highlighted the damage to these byways by 4x4 off-roaders, which prevent their use by local residents who cannot ride or walk down due to the ruts caused.
Partnership working with Police, Public Protection and others would also be explored.
Cllr Temple commented: “This is a perennial problem for our residents and I am delighted that the East Riding has now graded and levelled the Green Lanes in Garton and Sledmere, ready for the summer. I’m even more delighted that they have this temporary stop notice right across summer, preventing four-wheeled drivers ruining the ground again. My only hope is that they understand how much it costs to repair the damage they cause - over £30,000. Perhaps come Spring next year we can use the CCTV to discover just who is damaging the highway.”
Cllr Lee commented: “I know our residents value the fabric of our countryside and as a council we are keen to encourage all to get out and enjoy it. I am therefore delighted that highways have undertaken this remedial work, and that in future we may be able to trace those who damage what is essentially the highway.”
